Taiwan’s Swancor Renewable Energy (SWR) has unveiled plans for developing 4.4 GW of offshore wind projects in Taiwanese waters as an expansion of the Formosa portfolio.
The company, backed by affiliates of US-based investment group Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners, said on Tuesday it has filed three new projects with the Taiwan Environmental Protection Agency — the Formosa 4-1, Formosa 4-2 and Formosa 4-3.
With a combined capacity of up to 4.4 GW, the three wind parks will be capable of producing enough electricity to supply over 4.5 million homes once operational. They are planned for a large maritime area between 18 km and 20 km off the coast of Miaoli County, northwestern Taiwan.
SWR noted it has still not decided on the type of turbine foundations and is considering both bottom-fixed and floating variants. Depending on the results of environmental studies and securing the required government approvals, contracts and financing, the Formosa 4 complex is seen to go live after 2025.
SWR is the developer of the 128-MW Formosa 1 offshore wind farm that was fully commissioned at the start of 2020. Its 376-MW extension, Formosa 2, is currently under construction. Formosa 3 will have a capacity of up to 2 GW.
